Despite what a previous reviewer said, the earlier incarnation of this app was never good at bird ID. In fact it was atrocious, and I cringe at the idea that that reviewer relied on the app to determine what he was hearing. I’m glad that the app has given up on trying to ID birds and is just focusing on sound recording. I love the three second buffering that allows you to prepare to record without recording long periods of silence ahead of the actual bird sound. And the quality of the recordings is great. I docked my review two stars though because I’ve had a number of issues relating to phone orientation leading to crashes of the app, and even crashes of my entire phone. It may be that the developers have fixed some of those problems, but it makes me very reluctant to keep using the app when I don’t have that same issue with Merlin, even though it doesn’t have that helpful three second buffering.
Was thoroughly enjoying Song Sleuth. It let me record songs and then helped me identify the bird. Opened it today to find out I can’t use it anymore and advised me to download Song Meter Touch which does not help me match a song with a bird. Definitely Not what I was expecting. Will be deleting this app. I have no use for nothing but bird song recordings.
