I’ve been learning German for almost a year now and this app has been so helpful. I would recommend using this app along with other methods of learning as it won’t teach you everything, but it’s great to learn new vocabulary and review old words. I think the biggest plus for this app is that there’s words to start off, but you can also add your own at anytime. My strategy has been to take A1 German books and put any words I’m unfamiliar with from my readings into this app, and it’s super helpful. I also really appreciate the simple UI, lack of gamification, and nonintrusive ads. It’s genuinely very refreshing to see apps like this still around. I also agree with other reviewers that the ability to put a word under “master” yourself would be nice. I would also LOVE a community tab that allows people to upload their own packs that can be downloaded and shared with the community (like one for sports, job specific, etc). Or heck, even if the developers spent more time developing word packs and each one cost a dollar, I’d pay. Thank you for keeping this app simple and useful! Highly recommend to assist your learning.
I‘m so frustrated with how gamified most language apps have become. Then you’re left to make your own flash cards which can take ages. This app is the perfect antidote to those problems. Each word shows the gender and plural with different colors which is shown to help with memorization. It’s also incredibly helpful to have an image to associate with it. You can edit cards as you see fit so you can pick a different image, add more to the definition etc. The review to memorization process is great. (Each word needs to be reviewed 6 times to be considered “mastered” and then it will show up again later on to make sure you have it.) You can see your progress across multiple categories (ie 4% of movement verbs learned). If there’s one thing I’d suggest for improvement would be to make sure each word shows sentence or maybe even conjugation tables or whether it’s regular/irregular, weak/strong etc. Overall though fantastic and super reasonable. Developers, PLEASE don’t make this another annoying game all that teaches language learning like a child’s video game.
i think i technically grew up bilingual, because my father spoke a lot of german to me but i never learned how to respond. i can understand him fine, so long as he doesnt get too abstract or complicated, but i want to be fluent for personal reasons. this app has felt very useful to that end, in that its been a way to expand my vocabulary with very little effort and very few obstacles. i pair this app with a website that checks german grammar and i simply do my best and try to remember how the website corrects me. i put the rest of my phone in german also, so that at any moment i have an opportunity to practice reading german. i use my phone a lot, so its all muscle memory and context clues anyway, and this too has helped with subconscious grammar rules as well as vocab building. in addition its raised confidence.
