Reviews: What People Think About NPS Yellowstone National Park

I just returned home from my first trip to Yellowstone. After learning in advance that cell phone coverage was sketchy (I read something that 50% of Yellowstone has cell service phone coverage, but with AT&T I had no data coverage at all), I downloaded this app for offline use. It was crucial for our visit. Although I had also purchased a guide from a reliable travel company, the app was much for helpful. I used the map app nonstop during our drive through all the major roads in the park, and especially took the advice for recommended locations to visit. There were a few sights that were not recommended locations which I though should be (West Thumb geyser basin, for example), and additional details for dining options (mainly operating hours, but I also like to preview menus as a vegetarian) would have been helpful. Overall, the app was definitely useful and our trip would have been more difficult without it, but there is room for improvement.

Do as the site says and download the offline content so you can use the app when no cell co stage is available. Came in extremely handy today! Suggestions for improvement - 1) have the "auto center"(?) feature track you constantly vs just centering on your location when pressed and not following your location if your driving. Easy enough to manually progress the map or retapping the button, but would add to efficiency and effectiveness. 2) An ability to drop a pin or marker to identify to other app users where something interesting you saw is/was... e.g. Bears are "here" or wolves were "there". Obviously this would need to be corroborated and have an "as of time" for the siting or the pin dropping (if offline) and/or fade away as time expires or whatnot. This could also serve as a pattern analysis function where users - or maybe even rangers - could try to anticipate what the best odds of seeing a particular type of animal was or should be able to be seen.

Not the best app but it’s the only one available. It’s critical to have this app when you don’t have cell signal and need to know where you are and need to go in the park. App needs to have searchable locations and updated trail information. Several trails on the map weren’t accurate on a small portion of the trail while really confused me. It’s possible the park updated sections of the trails and it wasn’t reflected on here. Showing a distance ruler would be helpful to have to so I can estimate distances while hiking.

##About The Park.

##Notes
Download the app before you arrive. Cell service and Wi-Fi are limited in Yellowstone.
Continued use of GPS running in the background can dramatically decrease battery life.
