Reviews: What People Think About MuniMobile

I mainly use this app to tell when the next buses are coming and to plan routes - are use my clipper card to actually pay for tickets. On the few times when I did not have my clipper card, I use the app to purchase a ticket and it worked fine without issues. The only time I can encounter problems is when my phone connects to the free SF Wi-Fi, and then It can take some time for the route to load. In those cases, I just turn off the wireless to force it to use cell and it goes back to working fine. I don’t seem to have any of the problems that some of the one-star reviewers are giving. Have used this over a year now.

As a tourist using this app, I found the ability to purchase passes & show them on my phone helpful. However, the route planning could be wildly improved by 1) allowing you to save routes 2)auto-filling previously keyed routes 3) recognizing what stop you are nearest to while using. If you wait too long, or sometimes even flip to another app/window, it closes out and you have to re-key your route in the search fields. Being totally new to town and to public transportation, I needed to constantly refer to the routing info to ensure I was headed the right way and on the right bus. It was a hassle and time-consuming to continually rekey info...especially when on a bus and needing info quickly while stops are flying by. Also, it wasn’t really clear if I was supposed to be scanning my phone when entering busses or just showing it to the driver...clarification needed. Finally, as a tourist, I also didn’t realize BART wasn’t covered by the passes, even though it WAS listed in the routing suggestions. Things that could be somehow indicated within the app.

I’m being generous in giving 3 stars because the app does nothing now but scroll the start up screen. The cute visual of the bus and city. I’m rating it 3 despite it being 100% worthless right now because when it does work, it’s easy to use for different types of tickets, and gives me NextBus information. One thing that is incredibly annoying at all times is that I have to scroll through and choose which app I want arrival times for. Hello? I’m using the Muni app. Which agency do you THINK my inquiry is about. Should default to Muni on the Muni. All in all, the functionality of the arrivals times is poor. It takes too long to find your route and direction. And for locations like the metro stations, when you look up one route & direction, it should give you the times of the other routes going that direction from the same stop. Please fix the app, and make the UI better. Seriously, Muni is practically up the street from Silicon Valley and this is the best they could come up with?

A cellular network or a wireless Internet connection is required to purchase tickets, but you can use/activate your tickets offline.

Q: What if my battery dies?
Just like with paper tickets, you're responsible for making sure you have a valid fare at all times, so be sure to plan ahead!

IMPORTANT REMINDERS:
• Don't uninstall the MuniMobile app or erase your phone without transferring your unused tickets first. Your tickets are stored on your phone (which makes it possible to use them without a cellular network or a wireless Internet connection). Activate your ticket before boarding.
• In the subway, activate (“use”) your purchased mobile ticket before passing through metro station fare gates. Show your active ticket to the station agent, and pass through the fare gate closest to the station agent booth. If the station agent is not present, you may still pass through the gate as long as your ticket has been activated. Do not attempt to “tag” the gate.
• On the surface, use your purchased mobile ticket before boarding the vehicle. You may board through any door. If you feel more comfortable boarding through the front door to show your ticket to the transit operator, please feel free to do so.
• For Cable Car, use your purchased mobile ticket once you are on board the vehicle. Show your mobile ticket to the Cable Car conductor.
• Watch your battery level! Just like with paper tickets, you're responsible for making sure you have a valid fare at all times.
• Create an account before purchasing tickets, as this is the only way you can transfer your unused tickets if you get a new phone. (Note: Only unused tickets can be transferred. Use up any activated tickets before switching phones.)
