I was looking around for something to help me identify the birds that I see on a daily basis. Just what many would call the ‘common’ little brown jobs. I like to watch the birds but am terrible at identifying them, this app does all the hard work for me. There is no more trying to flick through a guide hoping I can match what I see. Particularly when you don’t know what you’re looking for anyway. With this app it’s a simple click of my camera and it does all the hard work for me. So far it’s been excellent at identifying the birds I’ve seen. Also, because I’m slightly colour blind having the photo on my phone allows me to take my time when comparing what I have seen with the bird in the data base. I have already started recommending the app to friends and would certainly recommend it here. As an added bonus I have contacted the support team with a question and it’s been the fastest and most useful reply I have had from any similar app.
I’m an occasional birdwatcher, not a twitcher! I used to have a great UK id/spotting app, simple and straightforward. As iPhones developed it became obsolete and now I find the apps overloaded and cumbersome. This is the closest I’ve got to my old favourite. If you have an idea of the bird it’s relatively easy to scroll though and find it and the search function works well. I like the links to Google videos and the ability to filter down to regional (UK) level. However, limited sounds/calls; there’s an option for one time add-on purchases but comes up as “not available”. I really don’t want (and in these time can’t justify) the full monthly subscription just to get the one extra feature I want. I assume the ID from recording a sample is also a paid ad-on as I can’t access it. One thing I’d like to see is more options for recording sightings - “heard/sound only”. We have curlew passing thru here on way to moorland breeding grounds but for last two years have heard them all summer and suspect they’re nesting - we hear them but never see them. As an endangered species it would be good to record that.
I absolutely LOVE the app, thank you! I've recently moved into a new house and my garden backs onto some woods, so I often get a variety of feathered friends visiting my garden wall when I'm sat by one of the back windows or doors. As a 34 year old workaholic I've not really spent much time recently outdoors, even in the last 18 months while I've been working from home. But since seeing the gorgeous little visitors at my new house during the last month, I've been amazed at how much it's simply just made me smile by seeing them perch on my wall for a few seconds. It has reminded me that there's more to life than work. I'm now going for regular walks, getting fresh air and taking a much needed break between work each day, and constantly on the look out now for different birds. Now that I have this app, it is no longer a lengthy chore trying to describe unknown birds to Google, and often still left wondering and on my own with no idea and no advice. The features that allow you to take a picture or a sound clip of the birds you spot, are so nifty, easy to use and time saving, and the amount of detail you get back is just brilliant. It makes me excited to see what my next bird will be and what I will learn from the app! In the meantime, I can build my knowledge on the quizzes, which were just a great additional Brucie Bonus find when I downloaded it - who doesn’t love a quiz?! I’m now starting to think about planning days out specifically so that I can start my bird watching journey properly, supported by the Smart Bird ID app and it’s gang of members.
