This was a good app that was intuitive and easy to use. Calculators should be quick and easy to use, as this one used to be. However, This latest “modern” update turns an easy to use app into an obtuse mess. Grey fonts on a light grey background make reading difficult. Minimized / no borders around anything make icons and functions bleed together. Hiding the tape so one can now “scroll it” instead of just looking at it when it was normally visible, is just dumb, and makes one hunt for something that just used to be there. Save yourself frustration and stay with the current version. Do NOT update like I did. Also, given the history of this developer, do NOT buy! Most likely, in a couple of years the developer will release another update that will again invalidate your previous purchases. I don’t trust companies that take away features you paid for, just so they can charge you again for an app that was previously working fine. Off to find a replacement.
Prior to the update this was just the best classic tape calc. It was straightforward and worked really well. The update is buggy to say the least. The last several times I tried the basic now-handicapped version (keep in mind I had previously paid for the app) — which the update converted my paid version to — it was completely non-functional. By that I mean it would not function as a calculator. I emailed the developer and they did not respond. I was just looking for instructions on how to make the now-hobbled app I had always used just be a calculator. This brings me to the next concern. If the update was going to turn my paid-for app into a nothing-app there should have been some warning. This was underhanded I feel. I don’t mind paying a developer for their hard work. But don’t steel my previous purchase. Let me know what you are doing and I will decide. I have since found a replacement tape calc app (10 Key Universal Calc) and was happy to pay 3 times the cost of the ‘key’ to make CrowdCafe’s app a calculator again. (Still only talking $6).
This is more than just your standard calculator. There are 4 modes to choose from. The one I find most useful is the Tape Mode. It is great for itemized calculations. There are just a couple of small issues that prevent me from giving it a perfect 5-star rating. The first is that while having a Scientific Mode is great, having a Scientific Mode with a graphing screen would have made any other calculator app obsolete. Secondly, there is no backspace key. This would make it so much easier to fix the most common typos. Instead, you must clear and re-enter the entry altogether. Not a huge problem, but just a bit inconvenient.
