I’m glad there is an app to help learn a language as uncommon as Yoruba, my parents’ native tongue. However, I wish that there were word-to-word translations for the phrases introduced. Not a big gripe, though; I’m enjoying the app so far.
I am learning a lesser known language, and I greatly appreciate Bluebird for having audio lessons and quizzes. I love the pronunciation analysis and vocal comparison features. This is a great supplemental app for learning a second language. However, I receive way too many error messages on the daily for the amount I pay. Switching lessons within the app is frustrating. There is a 100% chance the previous lesson will load, even if I close out of the app several times. Some lessons, such as the pronunciation and vocal analysis, would benefit from having a skip or fast forward function. The support link doesn't lead to anywhere. I also saw Bluebird respond to an earlier review about languages not having the same amount of information. I agree with that reviewer though Bluebird refuted this. I am learning Amharic, and there are significantly less lessons compared to Spanish. The latter of which has personalized courses, conversation, creating sentences AND daily lesson functions. Amharic has none of those. There are also glaring grammatical omissions in the essential verbs section. I think Bluebird would greatly benefit from not relying on their volume of languages as their only strength, and direct more energy into the user experience. I personally do not want to pay $9.99 every month to have access to a lot of languages if it affects the app quality this much. It would make much more sense to split the 163 languages into several apps so functionality is streamlined.
There’s so much information here! But... not all languages are created equal. There’s very little data for minority languages, which is the reason I downloaded the app. The more “major” languages have a lot of information, so if you wanna study a national language such as French or Mandarin Chinese, there’s a lot more lessons available. The reason for three stars? The language I ended up selecting (Icelandic) has a lot of lessons available, but when you select them, there’s multiple errors displaying on the screen. I’m not sure if they affect the lessons or not. At least it’s not the app crashing... 🤷🏼♂️ Please, keep improving this app. It has the potential to be the best in its field!
