Reviews: What People Think About Locast

All the reviewers that mention the frequent ads and not-really-free but free service are correct. You do need to make the $5 donation to make this tolerable. You’ll just have to weigh that against a physical antenna. I live in rural NC and can’t get VHF and UHF stations without multiple or a single expensive antenna so for us the $5 is a good value. The app broadcasts about 50 channels in my area in great quality. Its still digitally compressed to be delivered via internet where over-air would be uncompressed and higher quality but all stations come in clear without hassle of orienting antennas toward towers.
My major complaint is the user interface on Roku and the guide. The broadcast stops and takes you fully back to the guide. There is no picture-in-picture where you can continue watching current channel while browsing the guide. The channel select is also cumbersome. You have to select twice to start watching the channel, once to select the channel and once again to “Watch”. The guide also lacks a clock which sounds minor but you will find yourself looking for it all the time. Improve the UI and this would gain a star.
Overall the service is a good value for me but the “free” branding is a bit disingenuous because frequent ad interruptions will force you to donate.

Please do not pay attention to any of these bad reviews of this service which is great if they keep reviewing it in a bad way because they have to pay five dollars a month will guess what you get what you pay for . And what do you expect people to get everything for free and hand it to you the cost of a very good antenna is $60 and higher do the math.I live in New York City where constant interruptions with free TV antennas happens channels come in and out your TV goes to select all the new channels are only four come up with a stronger signals I’ve wasted hundreds of dollars on television antennas with the ugly things hanging on my window obstructing my views. I had simply had it with free TV and then I found locust The reception is in 4K crystal clear and I can watch every channel that’s free without the premium ones crystal clear with no other options and no ugly and tell us hanging anywhere and to me this was a godsend and I will gladly pay the $60 a year for their service again do not pay attention to the bad reviews talking about it’s not free!! That might deter our potential comfort customers from not subscribing ... thank you Locast❤️ for a great service

I saw reviews complaining about the app constantly complaining about wanting donations. It costs them money to format the platform to work on your phone. It’s not their fault that government and cable investors demanded that everything go digital. Analog may not have been as clear, but it transmitted further and more effective than digital. Since cable convinced government to go digital, and the people didn’t fight it hard enough, this is where we stand. Locast is free. It does interrupt reception about every 30 minutes to an hour to request a donation, but if you close the app and reopen it, you can watch free again. Only a slight inconvenience for free service. They have a wide variety of channels. I only wanted a particular local channel and they have it. I would’ve had to get a cable bundle and pay at least $45 a month for it. Locast requests only $5 a month for service. Try getting that from a cable company. Their requests stopped for us once we started paying. I still have to pay for internet service, but everybody pays for that these days. I believe this app is totally worth it. People will complain about anything.
About Locast
Locast.org is a public service to Americans that provides over the Internet the local broadcast signals of select markets. All you have to do is sign up online, provide your name and email address, and certify that you live in, and are logging on from, an available city ("Designated Market Area"). Then, you can select among local broadcasters and stream your favorite local station.
Locast.org is a "digital translator," meaning that Locast.org operates just like a traditional broadcast translator service, except instead of using an over-the-air signal to boost a broadcaster's reach, we stream the signal over the Internet to consumers located within select markets.
Ever since the dawn of TV broadcasting in the mid-20th Century, non-profit organizations have provided "translator" TV stations as a public service. Where a primary broadcaster cannot reach a receiver with a strong enough signal, the translator amplifies that signal with another transmitter, allowing consumers who otherwise could not get the over-the-air signal to receive important programming, including local news, weather and of course, sports. Locast.org provides the same public service, except instead of an over-the-air signal transmitter, we provide the local broadcast signal via online streaming.
You need a broadband Internet connection for optimal performance. Using a laptop, smartphone, or computer connected to the Internet, point your browser to www.Locast.org to sign up. You then can choose which local broadcast station to watch from your Internet-enabled device.
