About StaLApp
Learn fundamental data moves with the interactive StaLApp app for primary school children in grades 2 to 4
This app was developed for elementary school mathematics lessons and supports children in developing a basic understanding of organizing, structuring and interpreting data. Step by step, children learn to structure smaller data sets according to statistical questions and derive interpretations from them - an important prerequisite for understanding statistical diagrams and dealing with larger amounts of data.
Functions at a glance
- Create or import your own data sets
- Use existing sample data sets
- Four levels with increasing complexity
- Different data representations: Data maps, data dots, column/bar charts
- Step-by-step structuring and interpretation of data
- Visual feedback to support the learning process
How the app works - learning in four levels
Level 1 - Group:
Learners group data cards by their own and learn about data cards and data dots to represent data.
Level 2 - Structuring with colors & bins:
Data dots can be colored according to values of certain characteristics. Own “bins” can be labeled to make initial groupings.
Level 3 - Stacking & recognizing frequencies:
Data dots are to be placed by learners to match given “bins”. The app provides feedback in the event of incorrect positioning. By stacking the data dots in the “bins”, learners recognize frequencies - the height of the stack provides information about the frequency of a value.
Level 4 - Automated diagram & interpretation:
The app automatically generates diagrams from larger data sets. The previously learned relationships help learners to interpret these diagrams and make statements.
